our story

who we are

HOOCHIES of Houston is a grassroots digital advocacy organization committed to empowering Black Communities —especially Black Women—through

Advocacy, Civic Engagement,‍ ‍
and
Collective Action.

Founded in Houston, Texas, HOOCHIES of Houston unapologetically centers Black women. Our work is grounded in a reproductive justice framework that recognizes the interconnected nature of bodily autonomy, economic stability, community safety, and political power. Through digital organizing, public advocacy, and community education, we work to protect Black women, uplift Black leadership, and dismantle systems that perpetuate harm and inequity. We reject respectability politics and reclaim language historically used to marginalize Black

women, transforming it into a symbol of autonomy, resistance, and pride. To be a HOOCHIE is to be informed, bold, and unafraid to demand more—not only for ourselves, but for our communities. Our name is both a reclamation and a mission. HOOCHIE is an acronym that stands for Humans Overthrowing Oppressive, Controlling, Harmful Institutions with Effective Solutions. We believe liberation is achieved when everyday people organize, challenge unjust systems, and build solutions rooted in care, accountability, and community power.
